PMP Certification in India 2027: Cost, Eligibility, Salary & Is It Worth It?
Rishabh · 01 Oct 2026

PMP is the most recognised project management credential in the world and also one of the most oversold. Whether it is worth doing depends almost entirely on which industry you are in and what you are trying to move from. Here is the honest version.
Who is actually eligible
PMP is not an entry-level certification, and this trips up a lot of applicants who have already paid for training. The Project Management Institute requires documented project leadership experience before you can sit the exam.
There are two eligibility tracks:
- With a four-year degree: around three years of project leadership experience, plus 35 hours of formal project management education.
- Without a four-year degree: around five years of project leadership experience, plus the same 35 contact hours.
The 35 contact hours are the part most training providers sell. They are genuinely required, but they are the cheap component — you can satisfy them through a wide range of accredited courses at very different prices. Verify the current requirement directly with PMI, since eligibility rules and the exam content outline are revised periodically.
Be careful documenting experience. PMI audits a share of applications, and "project leadership" means leading and directing project tasks, not simply having worked on a project.
What it costs, all in

The exam fee is the number everyone quotes and the smallest part of the real bill.
| Component | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 35-hour training course | ₹15,000 – ₹60,000 | Widest variable; online self-paced is far cheaper than instructor-led |
| PMI membership | ~$149 first year | Optional, but usually pays for itself via the reduced exam fee |
| Exam fee | Member vs non-member pricing differs substantially | Check PMI's current rates; membership typically reduces it |
| Study materials | ₹0 – ₹10,000 | Much is available free or bundled with training |
| Renewal every 3 years | 60 PDUs + renewal fee | An ongoing commitment, not a one-time purchase |
A realistic all-in figure for an Indian professional in 2027 is roughly ₹45,000 to ₹1,10,000 depending mainly on how you buy the training. Paying ₹60,000 for instructor-led training when a ₹18,000 self-paced course satisfies the same 35-hour requirement is the most common way people overspend here.
What it does to your salary — and what it does not

Salary surveys consistently show a PMP premium, but the averages hide enormous variation. The credential does different things in different places.
Where PMP moves the needle:
- IT services and consulting firms where client contracts specify certified project managers
- Construction, infrastructure and engineering, where PMP is often a stated requirement
- Multinationals with formal PMO structures and banded progression
- Gulf and international roles, where PMP is frequently a screening filter for work visas and tenders
Where it does very little:
- Product companies and startups that run agile and care about shipped outcomes
- Roles where you are already the decision-maker and no one is screening your CV
- Early-career positions — and you would not be eligible anyway
The honest summary: PMP is a filter-clearing credential more than a skill-building one. It is worth most to people whose CVs are being screened by someone who does not know them. If you work in an agile product environment, read our comparison of PMP versus PRINCE2 versus CSM before defaulting to PMP, and our CSM roadmap if agile roles are the target.
Should you do it? A straight answer
Do it if you are in IT services, construction, infrastructure or consulting; if you are targeting Gulf or international roles; if your employer reimburses it; or if job descriptions you want keep listing it as required or preferred.
Skip it if you work in a product company that does not screen for it; if you do not yet meet the experience bar honestly; if you are hoping it substitutes for delivery experience it cannot; or if the ₹50,000-plus would do more for you as a domain or technical certification.
One more consideration people forget: renewal. PMP requires 60 professional development units every three years plus a renewal fee. It is a subscription to a professional identity, not a one-time purchase. That is fine if you stay in project management, and a slow annoyance if you drift away from it.
For training providers and edtech institutions
If you sell PMP training, the demand pattern above is your funnel — and it is a difficult one. High search volume, high price sensitivity, and a large share of enquiries from people who do not meet PMI's experience bar and will never convert.
Screening on eligibility before the enquiry reaches a counsellor is the whole game. Verified certification course leads are filtered on experience band, target credential, budget and timeline, so your team is not spending calls explaining to candidates that they are three years short of qualifying.
Judge the channel on cost per enrolment rather than cost per lead — in certification, the gap between those two numbers is unusually wide because of the eligibility drop-off. Our pricing page shows how that maps out, and you can measure it against your own conversion rate with a free two-day trial. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the total cost of PMP certification in India?
Realistically ₹45,000 to ₹1,10,000 all in, depending mainly on how you buy the mandatory 35-hour training. That training ranges from about ₹15,000 for online self-paced courses to ₹60,000 for instructor-led ones, and the rest covers the exam fee, optional PMI membership and study materials.
What is the eligibility for PMP certification?
With a four-year degree you need roughly three years of project leadership experience plus 35 hours of formal project management education. Without a four-year degree the experience requirement rises to about five years. PMI audits a share of applications, so document leadership of project tasks rather than general project participation.
Does PMP certification increase salary in India?
It depends heavily on industry. PMP moves salary meaningfully in IT services, consulting, construction, infrastructure and multinationals with formal PMO structures, and it is often a screening filter for Gulf and international roles. In product companies and startups that run agile, it typically has little effect.
Is PMP worth it for someone working in an agile product company?
Usually not. PMP is a filter-clearing credential most valuable when your CV is being screened by someone who does not know you. In agile product environments that assess shipped outcomes, a Certified ScrumMaster or a domain-specific technical certification generally returns more for the same spend.
Does PMP certification expire?
Yes. PMP requires renewal every three years, which means earning 60 professional development units and paying a renewal fee. Treat it as an ongoing commitment to a professional identity rather than a one-time purchase, because the upkeep matters if you later move out of project management.
